Potty Training: Our New Adventure!

image We are tackling the adventure of potty training! For a few weeks our daughter has asked to sit on the potty, read books about going on the potty, and overall shown a lot of interest in it. We went to Walmart and picked out her potty (shown to the left) and then headed to Rite Aid for Pull-Ups. When we got home, I setup her new potty…and…she wanted nothing to do with it. Nope, she wanted to sit on the “big girl” potty. I left it sitting there thinking she might come back to it, but she still doesn’t want anything to do with it. So I’ll be taking it back to Walmart for a seat that goes straight onto the toilet.

With that being said, I have no idea where to begin with potty training techniques. I’ve done a little research on sites that I trust and thought I’d share with you in case you’re in the same boat…or maybe about to be. Dr. Lehman is an author that I highly respect and trust his opinion. He has a few hints and tips about potty training on the Focus on the Family website. Focus on the Family also offers some ways to know what the barrier is that may be hindering your child from potty training. I am truly lucky to have a child who loves to sit on the potty! I never have to ask twice if she wants to try to go potty. However, sometimes she likes the toilet paper, flushing, and hand soap the most and I have learned to use that to my advantage. Such as, “No, we don’t flush until we go pee-pee!” Somehow that motivates her to sit back down and go potty.

I also went looking for free samples on training pants and the like. Here’s what I found:

Pampers Potty Training Kit:

• A free sample of Easy Ups Trainers
• High-value coupons
• Fun stickers & coloring pages
• Step-by-step potty training tips
• Potty Progress Chart
• Dora or Diego training trophy

Huggies Pull-Ups Big Kid Central (filled with great articles and tools)

Huggies Interactive Potty Training Success DVD

$2/1 Pull-Ups Training Pants (Jumbo pack or larger) – you can print one per month

Now I’m looking for REAL mom’s advice! Although, these articles have been very helpful, I consider personal experience better advice than anything else. So please share your thoughts, articles you’ve found, personal stories, etc. Anything and everything is greatly appreciated!

With both of my kids we put them on the potty about every hour whether they had to or not. Let them sit for 5 minutes at a time. We also had them try first thing in the morning and before bed. This helped with the nightime training.
During the day we would let them run around with their underpants on (if we were at home) this made it easier when running for the potty. Always expect some accidents but my kids found that they liked the feel of the underwear more than the diapers and then refused to wear diapers.
Even if there is an accident let her wear the wet underwear for a few minutes and she will get the idea that it doesn't feel as good as when they are dry.
Lots of patience and positive re-enforcement and maybe some bribery.
